EMSMDCCV Protocols project - Executive Summary

Scope

Iowa Code 132.3(2)b(4) – Develop, approve, and update service program protocols that meet or exceed the minimum EMS clinical guidelines approved by the department.

Problem Statement

The EMSMDCCV protocols were developed and updated using an interactive PDF file. This posed challenges, as it was difficult to ensure that every ambulance had the most current set of protocols and that all members had access to the latest copies. Additionally, the printing costs required to produce a complete set of protocols were both time-consuming and expensive.

solution

In 2022, we implemented an electronic solution through a dedicated webpage and mobile app. This enables us to share updates swiftly and efficiently. Changes can be made in real-time rather than waiting for an annual update, allowing us to stay adaptable when medical directors identify successful practices in the ER. Additionally, this platform provides information about hospitals across the state, including their locations. This makes it easier to contact ER departments for patient reports and offers directions to hospitals we may not frequently visit.

Financial Requirements

The app is quite costly, but we have managed to keep it free for 40 services and 450 responders thanks to grants and donations. If this support is not maintained, we will need to implement charges for services using the app. First responder services cannot bill for their response expenses, making this a significant burden for them and other services as well.
